Street Names

I first became seriously interested in photographing street names through doing family history research. Census records can tell us where our ancestors lived, and often the street names themselves hint at the history of the area in which they lived. My own father was born and brought up in a ‘two up and two down’ terraced house in Fort Road, Bermondsey. The house was shared by two widowed mothers, a blind grandfather, and five young boys. Despite my later interest in family history I have never visited the place, or seen the house, (which I believe no longer exists), and of course there are no photographs of the house, but the name of the road nevertheless has a significant resonance for me in relation to the stories that my father told me of his own tough childhood. Any “Fort” in the area has, of course, long since disappeared, assuming that it once existed.
